Room to Read Project- Computer Lab:

Location

Chea Sim Kampong Thmar High School is located in Baray District, which is in the southern part of Kampong Thom Province of Cambodia. It is along the road to Phnom Penh.

Background

The school director wants rural children to have the same opportunity to study computers that their urban counterparts have. There are some opportunities in the district for children to learn computers, but the facilities are very limited. Even students whose families can afford to pay for this education have a very difficult time getting access to it.

Chea Sim Kampong Thmar is a high school with 1,534 students. In 1979, the school was thoroughly destroyed by bombing during the civil war. It was rebuilt in 1980. The director has reported to Room to Read that 5% of the school's students are orphans, 83% are from farming families, 9% are the children of former soldiers and low government officers, and 3% are from the families of workers.

The vast majority of the people of Baray District are farmers who earn less than $1 a day. They are extremely vulnerable to droughts, which are a frequent occurrence in the dry season. The District has a medium-sized downtown where people from remote villages come to sell their agricultural products. Apart from this limited business activity, there is no other economic activity in the District.

In previous years, UNICEF provided scholarships for some of the poor students in this area but the project was very short. More recently, Chea Sim Kampong Thmar's School Support Committee has been working together to support the school on their own.

The Challenge Grant:

In order to assure community buy-in and ownership, all projects are implemented under a "challenge grant" paradigm, meaning that communities are required to raise a significant portion of the required funding for setup and ongoing operations before CGC and Room to Read will make its contribution.
